The Lake Erie Fiber Arts Guild is a group of artists from New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio who focus on original fiber art work. The Guild meets monthly to share new work and new ideas, to discuss other artists and inspirations, and to organize exhibitions. Loosely structured, with an open membership, the Guild celebrates its 10th anniversary with this exhibition.
Apart from fiber, which includes paper as well as woven, knitted, beaded and dyed fabrics, the common thread for Guild members is art. Members consider themselves fiber artists, rather than quilters, for example, (although some make quilts) or weavers or embroiderers (though some weave and embroider). Their emphasis is on the art object rather than the process. Attracted to fiber as a medium, the artists feel free to blend materials and combine techniques. While traditional fiber work is very much process-driven, Guild members see thread, yarn, fabric, beads as the building blocks of art, rather than sources of wardrobe. Nylon-wrapped soft sculpture and papier maché vessels share the stage with shibori-dyed fabrics and knitted constructions.
Artists participating in the 10th Anniversary Exhibition include Lainie Addessi, Cecile Armor, Evelyn Boeson, Victoria Brogdon, Dorothy Brown, Marsha Cisek, Shirley Davis, Passle Helminski, Barb Hauck, Pam Laskowski, Sara Millspaw-Brown, Carol Posch Comstock, Deborah Sementelli Hoenes, Peggy Spaulding, Susan Stone, and Phyllis Wilson. |
