On August 4, 2008, Governor Ed Rendell delivered a $1.5 million check to the Erie Art Museum - the final installment of a state capital grant totaling $3.5 million. This guaranteed that the Museum's $9 million expansion project would move forward with a late 2008 groundbreaking.
The design by nationally renowned architecture firm EDGE Studio includes four major galleries, a number of smaller galleries, a 250-person performance space, a public meeting space at a new unified entrance, improved space for conferences and lectures, additional special-events capabilities, public spaces both indoors and outdoors, a cafe, and a gift shop. The expanded Museum will be the first LEED-certified "Green" building in the City of Erie, promoting environmental sustainability as well as providing substantial savings in operational and utility costs.
The remaining funds are being raised from individuals, corporations and foundations in a local campaign that is moving steadily towards completion. But full community participation is needed to ensure the best project possible and success after the expansion opens. Please take part in building a singular community asset that will enrich generations and serve as focal point of Erie's reemerging Downtown cultural and entertainment corridor.
We look foward to sharing with you all that the expanded Museum will have to offer.
